What is baptism and why should I be baptized?

Baptism is simply being dipped in water usually by complete immersion of the body and head under water or by the sprinkling of water upon one’s head.  Baptism is an important event in the life of a believer.  Why?  First, because Jesus was baptized (Mark 1:9) and as our example we should follow Him in this important public demonstration of our belief that Jesus is our Lord and Savior (Acts 8:38; 18:8).   Jesus also commanded us to be baptized (Matthew 28:19-20).  Finally, baptism represents our new life in Christ illustrating that our sins have been washed away and that we identify with Jesus in His death and resurrection (2 Corinthians 5:17; Romans 6:4).

In short, your baptism is like a wedding ring.  Just as a married person wears a wedding ring as an outward expression of the commitment one has made to their spouse, your baptism represents an outward expression of the commitment you made in your heart when you believed in Jesus Christ as your Lord and Savior.

What you need to know about baptism:

Here at Messiah Christian Church, we practice child and adult baptism once you have made a commitment to follow Jesus as your Lord and Savior.  You may choose to be completely immersed under water or have your head sprinkled with water.  Pastor John offers opportunities to be baptized by complete immersion at a local body of water.  We provide you with a white robe to wear for your baptism and recommend that you wear a bathing suit beneath your baptismal gown.  Also, don’t forget a towel.

Pastor John will ask you if you have accepted Jesus as your Lord and Savior and by what name you would like to be baptized by (i.e. John Doe, Jane Ann Doe).  Then Pastor John will either immerse you under the water completely (of course you can hold your nose) or by sprinkling your head with water.  Following your baptism, a member of Messiah Christian Church will assist you out of the water and allow you to rest on the shore.  You will also receive a certificate commemorating your baptism.

Your baptism is a celebration and we encourage you to invite your family and friends to join you in this important occasion in your new life as a believer in Jesus Christ.

Our beliefs concerning baptism:

If you have been previously baptized and that baptism was meaningful and significant to you, then we at Messiah Christian Church accept your previous baptism as valid and rebaptism is not necessary.

Messiah Christian Church practices infant dedications and infant dedications are considered a time of celebration as the parents commit themselves to raise their baby in a Christian home.  The infant dedication ceremony occurs during either Sunday morning worship service with Pastor John inviting the parents, infant, family, and friends to the front of the church.  Pastor John will ask the parents and congregation to make a commitment to raise the infant in a Christian environment.  Following the commitment, Pastor John will bless the infant and show the baby to the congregation.
